The David Marshall Center
161 East Park Circle
Birmingham, AL 35235

Peer Specialists are people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness, are actively pursuing recovery and provide encouragement and hope to others who are seeking recovery.
Currently, JBS provides peer support throughout its residential program and community outreach program. Peer support services are provided by Certified Peer Specialists (CPS) employed by JBS.
Peer Specialists believe that anyone with a mental health diagnosis or trauma-related condition has the potential to recover and deserves the opportunity to transform their lives into the life that they desire to achieve. Peer Specialists complement other service providers, helping to support a more comprehensive, coordinated and more person-centered approach for every individual.
Tasks performed by Peer Specialists may include assisting individuals in articulating their goals for recovery, learning and practicing new skills, helping them monitor their progress, supporting them in their treatment, modeling effective coping techniques based on the Peer Specialist’s own recovery experience and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services.
